In this day and age, we should all consider how social media has exposed its ups and downs. While it may be a major source of information and a way to stay in touch with family and friends, it can also spread misinformation and emphasize negativity. Although these aspects of social media use have mixed results, I know it has lots of potential to be used for good. In fact, it has already been used in this context. 

Real-World Examples

Of all the many things I can think of about social media, I believe its ability to serve as a tool for voicing concerns to the public is crucial – and these concerns are often overlooked. If you think about it, the 2020 Black Lives Matter case, for example, gained so much credibility that people could express their thoughts and opinions without fear. As much as it raises questions about its real-world results, it still serves as a prime example of this topic. 

When the Black Lives Matter case happened in 2020, that same year saw a global pandemic that made social media the No. 1 place for news and updates, as well as for staying connected with people. Not only that, but mutual aid efforts were also created via social media during this time. Imagine what people had to go through during the 1918 Flu pandemic, because social media wasn’t a thing back then. In this generation, it’s a much different story, and man, am I grateful for all the technology I still have that helps me get through tough times like that year. 

Reasons For Optimism

As a social media user myself, I’m optimistic about certain aspects of social media being used for good, starting with the spread of more knowledge about global topics. Lately, I’ve been educating myself through social media to learn new things and, in a way, be smarter. I would like to see more topics I care about, like mental health awareness or career and relationship advice. 

There is also reason for optimism regarding social media’s communication during crises of any kind. As of now, the United States of America has been living in fear for various reasons, including the immigration crackdown. As we’ve seen in the past, social media can quickly share information and coordinate aid and support among people. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if the immigration situation were involved with that, and if it does get involved, it would be for the better. 

So, despite its flaws, social media certainly has a lot of power to make a difference in the world through the way it communicates and educates individuals. I look forward to seeing what the future holds for it!
