If you’re a social media user, you probably open platforms a whole lot throughout the day, whether it’s Instagram, TikTok, or many more. But what if somebody told you that you can use social media to make a difference in the world we live in?
This is called social media activism.
What Social Media Activism Is
For those who are unaware, social media activism is a simple concept and phenomenon that uses social media platforms to spread awareness, especially about political issues. It’s about posts, for example, being used for protests in any given circumstance.
When thinking about all the events that have occurred in this world, especially in recent years, we could use the 2020 Black Lives Matter case as a prime example, as it sparked an incredible amount of social media activity around activism. In fact, it became more than just a matter of supporting African American people’s lives.
Why It’s So Powerful
Social media is so powerful for activism because it lets users voice their opinions on issues, such as national crises. Back then, there was no such thing as social media, so a crisis of any kind wouldn’t have been dealt with that easily. Now, people can be heard, and that makes a huge difference.
Not only has public opinion risen in recent years because of social media, but how about personal and emotional engagement that comes with it? If someone shares a personal opinion that comes across as emotional, the engagement level would be very high.
Obviously, there are a few downsides, like potential misinformation that could get in the way. However, do you know the saying “actions speak louder than words?” Social media can get the word out in a heartbeat, but when people back it up with action, it goes a long way. Sometimes, even stumbling upon an engaging post about something important in the news is helpful, as long as people do something about it.
That’s how you describe the power of social media activism!
