In terms of content creation, visualizing data correctly is such an important concept to understand. It’s something used in all sorts of life aspects, including all the activities and tasks people do. I personally haven’t collected a whole lot of data in my life other than a digital detox of a social media platform. However, given that I’m a big sports fan, data and statistics have been well-known to me when I virtually see them on athletes and coaches.

I know data visualization has its pros and cons based on the technological advances that are involved. To be clear on that, I did some research on what specifically technology does to benefit data visualization, as well as what it does that provides disadvantages. From my understanding about what I read online, I think the potential for a data collection of something would be higher depending on how significant the benefits are and the severity of disadvantages.

The Benefits

Technology helps people create a faster and efficient data visualization analysis on anything. We live in a society where we all rely on technology one way or another, and because of that, data exploration has become much faster than in years past.

Improved software and tools are a huge example of good technological advances. This is because graphics visually look better than without it, and the visualization platforms it provides make it much easier for anyone to understand what data they are collecting.

Other data visualization benefits from technological advances consist of better communication and accessibility. Also, the fact that the technology is easy to use creates a better chance of people having the ability to handle complex data. It’s like part of my research on this topic when I read this article by Harvard Data Science Review. The author, Antony Unwin, essentially refers to another data-related project I did last year, which was to study a picture and analyze it critically. I immediately thought of that time when reading the section “A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words.” (Unwin, 2020).

The Disadvantages

There are plenty of negative impacts technological advances bring to data visualization, starting with what I believe is the biggest of them all: misinterpretation. This generally happens when viewers aren’t skilled with context or knowledge of statistics. For example, if you’re the opposite of what I am, which is a big sports fan, you’re likely not going to be that familiar with what you’re attempting to look at in terms of data. As Unwin states in the article I read, sets of graphics are useful for providing context (Unwin, 2020). This is why data visualization requires specialized skills in any involved software. You need to choose appropriate charts, colors, scales, and all other necessary parts to fully understand a data collection. It’s that simple!

You also could get misled from a visualization because of the software. Let’s say you’re using AI or some kind of technology source on the internet, you have to make sure you don’t end up with poor design appearances, because that can mislead audiences.

Good Chart Characteristics

As previously mentioned, appropriate charts, among other things, are what’s needed for a good data collection. A good chart, in my opinion, is one that’s easy to read and emphasizes appropriate information. In other words, I would most strongly respond to a chart that shows and tells an engaging story. Below is an example of what I believe is a good chart:

“Ethical NBA Champions” by The Pudding shows effective data visualization because it clearly communicates a complex topic through an interactive and engaging design. The topic is about whether each NBA champion since 2001 had an ethical title, and you can see the 2015 Golden State Warriors are the least ethical champion (The Pudding, 2026). There is a consistent use of labels and layouts that make the comparisons easy to understand. This allows readers to view it at their own pace instead of being overwhelmed with a bunch of statistics, which is also known as good storytelling.

So, everything I’ve mentioned regarding the topic of data visualization has a very significant importance, which is that depending on how the data is used will determine how effective it is on anything. The benefits and disadvantages of technological advances are crucial to consider when deciding on how to use data. I hope anyone who reads this post will begin to think about it all and try for themselves to see the differences between effective and ineffective data. If anyone actually wants to collect data in their lives, always remember to make your collection easy to read and visually appealing to viewers, because that’s what I believe is the result of a good chart.
